Senior Data Scientist, AdTech

Dow Jones publishes The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, MarketWatch, and other thought-leadership publications to inform the ambitious individuals transforming our world. Dow Jones is also leading its own transformation of the media business by investing in industry-first advertising experiences that drive performance for our advertisers by combining machine learning algorithms with unique rich media executions that are industry-first.

The Dow Jones AdTech team is seeking a Senior Data Scientist who will lead and support the core data science capabilities within Dow Jones AdTech. This role will focus on developing scientific approaches to execute large-scale data projects and advanced analytics to optimize our advertising platform capabilities and offerings to develop data science solutions for our company’s advertising platform for our consumer products. Team members are effective communicators and thrive on cross-team collaborations to build great products that deliver big business impacts at a global scale that are highly visible at the firm.

The Data Scientist will perform research, analysis, and modeling on organizational data; and develop and apply algorithms or models to key business metrics with the goal of improving operations or answering business questions. These findings and analysis are for use in decision-making for the Dow Jones advertising business. To succeed this candidate will need strong communication skills, both verbal and written, including emails, JIRA, and presentation-style documentation. Along with this, they will need a fundamental understanding of Agile concepts and OKRs, specifically planning, processing and feedback. Basic knowledge of the various tools and technologies used on projects is also a requirement.


  • Develop scalable solutions using state-of-the-art machine learning models

  • Draw meaningful insights from large datasets, define key metrics to track performance, and develop actionable solutions to tackle business problems

  • Use the Dow Jones terabyte-scale data lake to identify opportunities to enhance an understanding of the Dow Jones customer base and content consumption

  • Use visualization tools to present complex model and business insights in a simple, engaging manner for business stakeholders

  • Work closely with engineers to develop and deploy scalable machine learning applications

  • Identify opportunities for new data projects. Ask smart questions, diagnose the real problem, and develop a long-term solution

  • Work with stakeholders in a collaborative and strategic approach to develop the best solutions, and help translate those solutions and insights for the business to understand and leverage.


  • Postgraduate degree preferred

  • At least 3+ years of relevant experience, preferably in a digital domain

  • May have a Ph.D. in lieu of years of work experience

  • Experience in developing machine-learning models

  • Programming experience with either Python or R, plus one other general-purpose programming language such as Java or C/C++

  • SQL & relational database experience a must, experience with NoSQL, Big Data stack preferred

  • Strong foundation in inferential statistics and machine learning algorithms

  • Experience in visualization tools such as Tableau, PowerBI, etc.

  • Strong capacity to communicate complex concepts in easy-to-understand terminology

  • Ability to translate data and insight into a value-driving business plan

  • Experience with off-the-shelf models from AWS, GCP, and Natural Language Processing is desired

  • Experience in creating and delivering training programs desired but not essential
