Dow Jones is seeking a VP of Data Engineering to lead and manage our Data Engineering team and develop their capabilities. Reporting to the Chief Data Officer, you will work closely with product, marketing, membership, advertising, and editorial groups to provide data platform capabilities allowing the company further effective, data-driven decisions. Candidates for this role will need demonstrated experience in large-scale, cloud-based technologies and data architectures. A strong focus on data quality is also required for success in this role.
Recruit, lead, and mentor a world-class data engineering team
Oversee the architectural and technical design of Dow Jones’ data systems, applications, and processes, creating innovative data-driven insights
Manage and extend existing cloud data lakes with multi-system data; grow the footprint of data captured; ensure that data pipelines and resulting datasets are well-maintained and accurate
Set data standards and ensure that all Dow Jones products contain complete, accurate, and detailed measurement throughout the customer journey. Be an expert in the data structure of both raw and processed datasets within our ecosystem
Grow Dow Jones’ data maturity, leveraging modern data technologies and building advanced analytics capabilities within the organization.
Lead and organize teams that can effectively maintain and develop data platforms on the petabyte scale
Work with stakeholders to define priorities and new tasks for the data engineering team
Identify potential blockers and dependencies of data engineering activities with other teams
Develop trust with technical and non-technical stakeholders through communication and collaboration
Propose new strategies to improve the stability of the real-time pipelines and batch processes
Propose and ensure delivery of data platform capabilities for the enterprise
Keep track of tech-debt in data engineering so it can be addressed in tandem with new development
Produce operational metrics to measure throughput and to build scale within a growing organization
Drive the technical solution for providing appropriate data governance, observability, and quality.
Work with your leadership team to communicate, properly resource, and plan strategic roadmaps
Attract and retain the high-caliber Data Engineering talent
Manage current vendors and selection of new vendors
Build and model a culture of excellence, inclusivity, and innovation
10 years experience with large-scale, consumer product data engineering
7+ years leading multi-layered teams
Extensive experience designing, building, and evaluating analytical datasets & overseeing enterprise analytics, BI, and marketing tools
Demonstrated ability to grow high-performing teams
Be a skilled collaborator who can build relationships & influence internal teams and
stakeholders at all levels of the organization
Experience with CPD, digital marketing and/or digital advertising datasets
Deep knowledge of the cloud computing and data engineering best practices
Hands on and working experience with Agile development methodology
Experience managing globally distributed teams
Experience with CPD, digital marketing and/or digital advertising datasets a plus
ETL experience with cloud-based or traditional tools needed
Experience in SQL, Python and / or Scala
Strong written and oral communications needed
