Dow Jones is looking for a Distinguished Software Engineer (DSE) who will work alongside software engineers to build and deploy highly resilient and scalable, globally distributed software platforms. A DSE is someone who exhibits the passion to innovate, collaborate, and communicate well thought out technology solutions for our business. The candidate will be responsible for helping to shape the go-forward technology direction of the organization, working with senior leaders, vendors, and partners to influence technology roadmaps and the adoption of new technologies across the enterprise. In addition, they will teach, mentor, and grow other domain experts within the organization. They are extremely motivated and passionate about investigating new technologies that not only benefit projects within their business unit, but the technology organization as a whole.
Role within the B2B Business Unit
While the DSE role involves a strong commitment and contribution to the technology direction of the enterprise as a whole, their primary responsibility will be the architecture and design of critical, highly visible projects for B2B. They will work with a development manager and their team to lead architecture, design, and technology assessments. Once the architecture is established and mature, the DSE will transition to a more of a consulting role for the team and repeat the lifecycle on another project engagement.
A Track Record of Success - The DSE candidate will have a history of project successes across a range of problem domains and technologies that demonstrate their ability to drive through issues that naturally arise in any project to see it to completion.
Leadership - The candidate must have the credibility and presence to lead senior engineers through architecture and design activities as they will have no direct management authority. Instead, they will lead by the influence of their reputation and position in the technology organization
Communication - The candidate must possess strong communication skills to document and present architectures and concepts to diverse audiences ranging from peer groups up though senior management to the enterprise level and have the ability to tune the communication accordingly. As a DSE, they are expected to evangelize technical advances both internally and externally.
Risk planning and forecasting - A DSE must have a good history of making proper decisions and are expected to apply the appropriate level of due diligence appropriate for the decision at hand, being able to identify risks and consequences of actions being made or to be made. They will be able to effectively communicate these both to the TLT as well as the engineering teams. This would include a plan or a direction to minimize or mitigate these risks.
Influence - A DSE needs to be influential across the organization as they will be the evangelists across engineering. They work well across business units and are respected in other areas of the business. They must embody a range of skills that will make them influential in both in technology and in business/product. This individual should be outwardly recognized by technical leadership as well as business leadership.
Mentorship - A DSE must be able to identify and capitalize on the potential of talented engineers within the organization and to delegate the responsibility of new tech adoption to others helping them develop and grow in their career path.
Cross Business Unit Collaboration - The candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work effectively across business units in an organization. If they have not had the ability to work across business units, they should at the very least show the behavioral ability to do so.
Commitment - DSEs are committed to steering the engineering organization, take ownership, and show pride in this role. This applies to not only their own innovations, but also in new technologies introduced by engineering as a whole. They believe deeply in the Dow Jones engineering organization and can influence other engineers to drive the vision as well.
AWS Technologies - AWS solution architecture is at the core of every project at Dow Jones. The candidate should possess at least seven years of experience architecting and building systems on AWS using a range of AWS resources especially databases, storage, and messaging. A thorough understanding of security and networking principles as they apply to AWS resources is required.
Skills and Experience
Applicants must meet one of the following education and experience requirements:
8+ years of relevant experience in software architecture and solutions development
5+ years implementing large scale architectures in AWS
2+ years of experience building cloud native solutions
Plus: Experience with Kubernetes, Istio, Envoy and Spinnaker
Extensive experience configuring operational monitoring for platform components
Deep understanding of cloud services (compute, storage, messaging, …)
Strong experience with cloud security (layered VPCs, WAF, Security Groups, …)
Clear understanding of cloud-based networking (DNS, Load Balancers, …)
Solid experience with software resiliency models (circuit breakers, exponential timoffs, …)
Strong understanding of cloud-based deployment models (blue-green, canary, …)
Thorough understanding of DevOps principles and building code pipelines
Extensive experience leading teams through influence, not command/control
A strong work ethic and a positive attitude
Excellent technical aptitude and a desire to learn constantly
Clear written and verbal communications.
Responsible, self-disciplined, and motivated
