The Editorial and Publishing team is looking for an Engineering Manager who can be a strong “player/coach”. The ideal candidate will manage a four-to-six-person team and also use her or his engineering skills to make key architectural decisions and to take directly on substantive development responsibilities. This creative and passionate Engineering Manager will help shape the future of our global Content Management (CMS) and Newsletter systems.

Engage leaders from Technology and the business to accomplish business unit and team objectives by managing staff and engaging in all aspects of the Agile development life-cycle.
Maintain the team by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training both employees and consultants.
Develop the team and individuals by working with each of them on personal growth opportunities. Provide coaching, counseling, and disciplinary actions where necessary.
Accomplish goals by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
Participate and lead technical discussions about technology, infrastructure and consider the pros/cons of technology choices based on business value, scalability, maintainability and project delivery performance.
Maintain and share knowledge in emerging technologies and tools in the industry.
Be able to prioritize and manage work, and adhere to critical project timelines in a fast-paced environment.
Minimum ten (10) years of development experience in increasingly responsible roles required plus four (4) years of management experience.
Understanding of how Content Management and Newsletter systems fit into a large media organization like Dow Jones. A deep understanding of WordPress is critical and a solid understanding of Campaign Monitor, Sailthru or other Newsletter SAS tools would be a big plus.
Extensive experience (4+ years) with WordPress including experience extending and customizing the WordPress Administration Dashboard, developing plugins for wp-admin, and building highly performant and reliable interfaces with other systems.
Knowledge of and some experience with the new WordPress Gutenberg editor and Gutenberg Block development (React) is a big plus.
Experience with React, Redux and NodeJs and a willingness to move to these technologies as WordPress evolves.
Experience with SQL databases, experience with MySQL a plus.
Experience with Agile methodology.
Proven understanding of Computer Science fundamentals including web development, service-oriented architecture, cloud computing, test driven development and domain driven design.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
BS in Computer Science.
Exposure to Docker, AWS or other cloud or container based application deployment is a plus.
