Manager, UX Research, Consumer

As a Manager, UX Research you will be a voice and advocate for users of our websites and apps, learning about their goals, desires and preferences. You will help deliver a systematic study of target users and help shape their requirements, whilst also providing support and actionable insights on how well our solutions succeed in meeting their needs. Your work will add realistic contexts and insights to our UX processes as our practice evolves also.
You will be responsible for managing a team ensuring that department objectives are met. You will maintain staff by recruiting, orienting, and training employees and support the development of their personal growth opportunities.
This will be a collaborative role requiring partnerships with Experience Architecture, Experience Design, Optimization, Customer Intelligence, Technology, Project Management, Product as well as SMEs and Partners across Dow Jones.
The Manager, UX Research will report to the VP, UX Research & Experimentation.
Work closely with Experience Architects, Experience Designers and our key partners to define outstanding end-to-end user experiences
Contributes to overall business strategy in collaboration with other functional area leaders
Serves as the key point of accountability for UXR initiatives at every level, covering multiple programs and projects for our consumer products such as WSJ, Markets, Membership and shared platforms
Serves as the key point of accountability for UXR initiatives at every level, covering multiple programs and projects for our B2B products such as Dow Jones Factiva and Dow Jones Risk & Compliance
Designs and delivers UX Research and testing approaches that contribute to a user-centered design approach and prioritization of user needs
Helps to recruit and mentor a team of outstanding UXR professionals by providing vision, coaching, and mentorship
Helps to create a dynamic team environment by fostering collaboration, experimentation, agility, and vigorous inquiry, while maintaining high expectations and attention to detail
Helps to create and evolve user research and best practices that account for user needs and context, while reinforcing brand values and standards
Ensures adherence to standardized UXR output and delivery methods
Participates in the development of processes for UX resource engagement with project teams during ideation, prioritization, development, and quality assurance phases
Plans and conducts user research, usability testing efforts, and analysis
Oversees delivery of, and typically creates, artifacts that include study analysis and recommendations, research briefs, research plans including participant recruitment and other dependencies
Play an integral role in centralizing and organizing user insights in a knowledge repository
Typically manages vendor relationships for outsourced UXR activities
Staff management functions include, but are not limited to, coaching, training, planning and performance management in a supportive, team oriented, collaborative manner
Defines and manages prioritization of the research roadmap for all upcoming projects and on-going incoming requests
Delivers actionable evaluations of proposed and current UX solutions
Leads and manages on-going benchmarking initiatives to help products measure, identify and track opportunities for improvement
Required Skill Set:
7+ years experience
Bachelor’s Degree in HCI, Communication Design, BFA, or related experience
Experience advocating for research at an organizational level
Proven examples of actionable results that shape and improve the user experience and enable business goals
Background with developing and implementing research standards and best practices
Plan and carry-out various rapid user testing on a regular basis throughout the product development life-cycle
Experience conducting, analyzing and communicating UX research
Experience with UserZoom or other user testing software
Experience with industry standard digital product design tools (Figma, Adobe CC,, Miro)
Basic understanding of rich interactive, consumer, or enterprise web applications
Understanding of latest Web and App user experience best practices
Understanding of user-centered design principles
Strong verbal and written communication skills

NYC Pay Range: $65,000 - $200,000
